Sorry, posted this in the wrong area, I’m dumb sometimes. Karen, on the middle comic that you blogged about cutting the punchline from, you could do a panel with Eve extending her arm, stopping the view at the wrist, and Manny saying off panel something to the effect of “Now THAT’S a bad finger.” It’s not “dirty” and only hints at a vulgarity. That’s the direction I would go in that situation.

So, everyone’s getting the finger:(
That makes Baby Jesus cry.

Loved the Dylan/Spears comic. A radio DJ once commented that guys like Spears’ song, but are embarassed to be seen singing it. Would love to see Manny get caught humming it.

Still laughing. Always take the time to check the comic.

LOL Loved the neighbors having a loud, drunken backyard party strips!! I kind of did this sort of thing once to some drunken fool that called my husband’s cell phone at 1:30 a.m. and woke us up. Not only did he wake us up, he was so drunk that he didn’t believe he’d dialed the wrong number and kept calling until I turned it off. So at 6:30 a.m. I turned my husband’s phone back on and called this fool back. He answered all groggily and hungover sounding – heheheheh – so I SCREAMED into the phone “GOOD MORNING MOTHER@$%$*&#!!!!! TIME TO GET YOUR STUPID DRUNK ASS UP!!!” He said something akin to WTF?!?! So I answered “The next time you call someone when you’re drunk at 1:30 in the f’ing morning, you’d better make sure you dial the right number, asshole!” There was silence and then he mumbled, “uh, sorry.” and hung up. LOL!!!!

Leslie – 12 yr old girl – has new boyfriend come over – they want to ‘play a game’ – Twister is chosen.
Uhh, no. 🙂

A father just does not want to see his teenage daughter playing Twister with boys. He might have to kill someone. I understand completely.
February 9, 2009 at 11:19 am
A Noun
I don’t see playing Twister with one’s brother as an issue, nor do I see a need to create a strip about it.
How did we go so far backwards, to think that everything is a threat to virginity and innocence, that everything is so bloody frightening? Ooh scary scary. Next Manny will stop shaving because shaving cream coming out of an aerosol can looks too much like an ejaculation. Oooh, unclean!
If I translated this strip to reality, I’d see that Ivy just wants Owen’s butt out of her face so he doesn’t fart on her. 99% probability that no thoughts of genitalia were involved.
This is becoming such a closed-minded, sanitized strip all of a sudden. If I wanted that, I’d be reading Rose is Rose.
February 9, 2009 at 11:33 am
Libertarian
I don’t think it has anything to do with Ivy and her brother. The dad is picturing Ivy having over male friends and playing twister with them like she would her brother. I suspect most fathers would feel the same way.
And I don’t think Rose is Rose would ever be mentioning a butt in someone’s face!
February 9, 2009 at 5:00 pm
Sara
I agree with the other posters. Manny’s picturing his “baby girl” playing Twister w/ boys, not just w/ Owen.
As a Mom I’d feel squicky about letting my teen son play with a teen gal. (That’s not as far away a possibility as I’d like…) I remember playing Twister with my boyfriend…we were 15 and things got… wellllllll…. let’s just say if my Dad had seen it he’d’ve developed those blood pressure problems a mite earlier in life. (And no, it didn’g get x-rated… just very much into the pg-13 range… boy could that boy kiss… oh, and oddly enough I just remembered his name… Owen! LOL!)
February 9, 2009 at 5:54 pm
Laura
OK, so, I’m not a mom. I’m only 20 and in college. However, I do want to point out that my friends and I, even now, play Twister, and it is not dirty at all. Well, ok, thats a lie, when there are awkward positions, we do make dirty comments. Hey, I’m a college student. But its not intentionally dirty. I can DEFINITELY see it being an issue for a dad or two people with sexual tension playing it.
But I’ve played with a co-ed group of friends in high school quite a few times, and honestly, it was the farthest thing from dirty ever. None of us were attracted to each other, we were seniors in high school, and we were in that weird time between finals and graduation. Yea, it got awkward, and its reallllly hard fitting 6 teenagers on a twistermat, but it was really fun. The last two people were a boy and a girl, and really by taht point it was more interesting to see how flexible they were. I can’t remember how it ended, but I think, knowing my group, we got bored and tickled them at a particularly weird position.
Now, should I ever get a bf, and he wanted to play twister with me, he’d have a hard time kissing me as I am about as flexible as a Barbie doll.

Also, wouldn’t it be GREAT to see Manny and Eve playing this? Just a thought.

Say WHAT, A Noun?!? Are you talking about the same CBW that used the word “shit” in a strip not too long ago??
If CBW were turning into Rose is Rose, a little angel that looked like Owen would transform to battle mode and destroy the Twister game with his fiery sword, Manny would beg Eve to gain weight because he’s a chubby chaser and Eve would turn into her alter-ego, Vicki the Biker and ride away on her hog when things got tough. Oh yeah and Nosferatu would be hanging by one claw from the drapes. I haven’t seen anything like that in CBW.
February 9, 2009 at 7:42 pm
BJMallory
and before ANYONE gets upset with me using the term “chubby chaser”, I meant no disrespect to my full-figured sisters out there.
February 9, 2009 at 11:10 pm
Leslie
None taken BJ 🙂 Seriously tell angry guy up there to whine to someone who cares. I guess I only saw the little brother part and it did not occur to me Manny was referring to playing with other boys. Though another good punchline would have been Owen letting a huge one rip right in her face. Yeah Twister is about as close to foreplay as kids can get next to playing doctor.

Good strips today!
MAkes me think of my own life. My little Spectrum Kid won’t take any kind of meds, pills or liquids. If he gets sick we either have to give him his “up da’ butt medicine'” (his words) or take him in for shots of whatever he needs. HE’s having a hard time getting settled in the nights a bit, not too bad but enough. I’ve been trying to warm milk thing, but so far no go. *sigh*

Oh the woes of the weary parent of an autistic child. My 12 year old autistic daughter never EVER sleeps past 6 am, and has only started sleeping through the night about 5 months ago. Her version of through the night is 11 pm til 6 am, or she stays in her bedroom during that period of time. I still have a baby monitor in her room and half the time, I listen to her sing for a large portion of the night. Getting medicine down her was a nightmare until I sat with her one day and tried 15 times in a row to get her to swallow a pill. AFTER 4 soggy capsules were spit back at me, she finally managed to swallow one. Since then, if is is in pill form, she knows that it doesn’t taste yucky like the liquid, and she will swallow it. She still screeches in her “mister bill” voice “I don’t like pills” but swallows them none the less. And Melatonin is a great sleep aid for these kids in my humble opinion. It also comes in liquid from the health food store-but very expensive this way! Anyway, I am rambling, so I will say “thanks for a great bunch of strips”. I feel your pain.

Your strip today is too funny! My DH uses the term “wicked dump” it is just so opposite from his corporate executive reserved self that it grossess me out! He knows that and that’s why he does it — shock value.
The comment a above reminded me of when we lived in Singapore. There was a souvenir shop that had a sign above the front door that said “Kodak, for all Your Golden Shower Moments”. LOL!!
Anyway, love the strip today.

The strip I saw yesterday about the “Ellen” show and the guest whose child was “cured” of autism… I felt just like Eve! I wanted to grab a bat and join her!!! I’m sick of the “haves” telling us “have-nots” that if WE make the right sacrifices we can have access to the same expensive treatments they can afford… huh… IF I get my priorities right? I mean, ok, sure I can do that, I don’t need to put food on the table for my kids… they don’t really need new shoes…or clothes or anything like that…ok.

LOVE today’s strip!!!! Eve perceiving that she’s been rejected by a lesbian without regard for the fact that she’s heterosexual & married totally cracks me up. Reeking of desperation, indeed, but ya know, every woman wants to feel desirable, right? 🙂
Good strip, nice drawing & colors. Well done!

I love this strip! I have actually said this to my husband (although I was commenting on non-hits BEFORE I was married). I’m not a lesbian, but still, I COULD be one so why didn’t any guys (since I’m not gay) or women (in case I might be?) hit on me? It was so depressing. And yet my husband so-o-o didn’t get it. Thanks for the real-life attitude!

Wow I didn’t know that Archie was going to tie the knot. I read Archie comics almost religiously in elementary and Jr. High but haven”t read it in almost 15 years. That might be an episode I have to buy.
I totally relate with you making fun of the little toddlers names in today’s comic. I have two cousins who are sisters and are named Emily and Katey. Well growing up everyone would sing when we saw them – “Em i l e Kate e y m o u s e. Heck we still do it. Their now in their thirties and it still bugs them.
I’m still one of the people who watches John and Kate. If only to see how badly its going to escalate out of control.

Our son was just diagnosed two months ago, and it made me think of Seth. One of my favorite comics was when Seth was staring down the sewer grate and the other children came over to see what he was looking at.
I was reminded of Seth again the other day. Some kid kept coming over and grabbing whatever toy our son was playing with. Our son thought this was a game and laughed so hard he fell down. We were so proud: it was the first time he has even noticed there are other kids at the playground.

Hi there, just learned of your strip and blog from a friend. Love what I’ve read and it seems my timing is perfect, because you are just back from a hiatus. I am a parent of three including a severly disabled teenager – not autism but physical disabilities. We are leading somewhat parallel lives. I just subscribed to your feed and I invite you to check out my blog as well http://www.sfmaggie.blogspot.com.

I just read Saturdays strip and had to laugh out loud. I have a niece that decided a couple years back that she wanted to dress that way. I know how I reacted the first time I saw her and can only imagine how her father reacted. She is 18 now and a rather intelligent girl. She still does the whole goth dressing thing but she has toned it down some since the beginning.

I don’t get around to reading your blog every day, so I just read the story about the events surrounding the end of your syndication. I have been a fan of Clear Blue Water for several years and it is one of my favorites. As long as you keep writing it I’ll keep looking forward to reading it. I surely do miss CBW (sniff). It’s one of those rare strips with real characters you can believe in and care about. I have no doubt there’s a good reason for the extended absence, but if it’s not gone forever, please give this fan (and others) some reassurance. Thanks.

Karen, As Vetern’s day approaches, I hope you and your family are doing well. I know you remember you still have fans, but you have had to deal with the ups and downs of life. Also I read that Bil Keane (Family Circus) passed away on Tuesday and I was curious if you had any thoughts on his passing. Your strip always reminded me of an edgier version of the same kind of family he protrayed. Take care and I hope you find time to up date your blogs.
